Jug Handle State Natural Reserve has the Ecological Staircase Trail, a 2.5-mile route across five marine terraces showing coastal ecological succession. It reaches Hans Jenny Pygmy Forest, a stunted woodland on acidic, nutrient-poor soils with tiny cypress, pine, rhododendron, manzanita, and huckleberry. The forest is a California and National Natural Landmark.
