Before you start planning

Why does the Mendocino Coast suit a celebration?
Because it is far enough to feel like leaving, small enough that a group takes over a town for a weekend, and beautiful in a way that needs no decorating. The distance that keeps the crowds down is the same distance that makes people stay two nights instead of one.
How far ahead should we plan?
Twelve to eighteen months for a summer or early autumn wedding, three to six months for a reunion or a retreat, and a matter of weeks for a memorial or a midwinter escape. Beds are the constraint in every case, so secure lodging before anything else.
What is the quietest time of year?
January through March, and midweek in any month. Winter here is stormy, empty and dramatic, with the lowest rates of the year and the best surf. Late summer and early autumn are the clearest and the busiest.
Do we need to hire a planner?
For a wedding of any size, it helps a great deal, because you are coordinating several independent small businesses across a stretch of coast with patchy phone signal. For a reunion or a retreat, one organized person with a spreadsheet is usually enough.
