Creative Retreats on the Mendocino Coast
For writers, painters and makers who want a week where nothing happens except the work.
What to know first
The coast is an unusually good place to make things, mostly because there is very little to interrupt you. Take a room with a table and natural light, plan on cooking, and let the fog do the rest. A week is the right unit. Three days is spent arriving and leaving.

Creative Retreats: the questions we get asked
- Is there an arts community here?
- A real and long standing one. There are working galleries, art centres, a live theatre scene and independent bookstores along this stretch of coast, and most of them are run by the people making the work. Introduce yourself. It is a small place and it is not hard to meet people.
- Where can I actually work?
- Where you sleep, in most cases. Ask for a room with a desk or a large table, and check that there is enough light and a socket near it. Cafes here close early and are small, so they are a break rather than an office.
- What is the best season for a quiet week?
- January through March. Rates are at their lowest, the towns are quiet, the storms are excellent to write through, and you will have most trails to yourself. Bring more warm clothes than you think.
- Can I show or sell work while I am here?
- Sometimes, if you ask early. Galleries here plan shows months out, but open studio events, group shows and co-operative spaces do have room for visiting work. That conversation starts with a visit, not an email.
