Family Reunions on the Mendocino Coast

For the person in the family who ends up organizing everyone, and needs beds, a kitchen and somewhere the kids can run.

What to know first

Reunions on this coast work when one big kitchen anchors the weekend. Book the house or the campground loop first and treat restaurants as the exception rather than the plan, because a party of fourteen is hard to seat anywhere here on a Saturday night. Give people one shared meal a day and leave the rest of the time open for the beach.

Family Reunions: the questions we get asked

How do we house twenty or thirty people?
Usually two or three houses within walking distance of each other, or one inn taken over for the weekend, rather than one enormous rental. Large single properties exist but they are few and they book a year ahead for holiday weekends.
Is this a good coast for kids?
Yes, with layers. Tidepools, dune trails, driftwood forts and a lot of open state park keep small children busy for days. The water is cold and the surf is serious, so this is a wading and exploring coast rather than a swimming one.
What about a group meal?
Cook one, cater one, and go out once. Several caterers here regularly deliver family style to a rental house, which is easier than moving twenty people to a dining room, and a good deal cheaper than three restaurant dinners.
Will everyone be able to get a signal?
Not reliably. Cell coverage is patchy along Highway 1 and disappears in the redwood canyons. Send the address, the gate code and the meeting time in writing before anyone leaves home, and agree on a landmark to meet at if phones stop working.
