Elopements on the Mendocino Coast

For two people, a witness or two, and a headland at the right hour.

What to know first

An elopement here is mostly a question of light and parking. Pick the hour first, usually the ninety minutes before sunset, then pick a bluff, beach or lighthouse you can actually reach and stand on comfortably in shoes you can walk in. Book the room the night before rather than the night of, so a late fog bank is an inconvenience and not a crisis.

Elopements: the questions we get asked

Do we need a permit to elope on a beach or bluff?
For two people, an officiant and a witness, usually not. The threshold is generally the group size, chairs, arches, amplified sound or blocking a trail. If your elopement is ten people standing in a circle for twelve minutes, you are closer to a walk than an event, but check the specific park before you commit to a spot.
Where do we get the license?
Mendocino County issues marriage licenses at the county clerk in Ukiah, which is inland and about an hour and a half from the coast over a winding road. Any California county can issue a license valid statewide, so many couples get theirs at home before driving up. Give yourself a business day of margin.
What is the best month for a small ceremony?
September and October for clear light, and midweek in any month if you want the headland to yourself. Winter is dramatic and underrated, with big surf and empty trails, as long as you accept that a storm may move you indoors with no notice.
Should we hire a photographer for something this small?
It is the one vendor almost nobody regrets. A photographer who works this coast knows which turnout has the view at six in the evening, where the wind is survivable, and how long the walk takes in a dress.
