Celebration travel

Celebrations of Life on the Mendocino Coast

For a family gathering people on short notice to remember someone, in a place that person loved.

What to know first

These come together in weeks rather than months, so ask about a room with a short lead time and be direct about what the gathering is. Halls, galleries, parks and inns here are used to it and are usually kind about it. One indoor space with chairs and a kettle, plus one outdoor spot for a walk afterwards, is generally the whole plan.

Celebrations of Life: the questions we get asked

Can we book a space quickly?
Often yes, especially midweek and outside the summer peak. Call rather than email. Say the date, the number of people and that it is a memorial, and ask directly what is free.
Are ashes allowed to be scattered here?
California allows scattering at sea and, with permission, on private land, and there are rules about distance from shore and about public parks. Check with the specific park or with the funeral provider handling the arrangements rather than assuming, and if a boat is involved, book a licensed operator.
Where do out of town family stay?
Inns here are small, so spread the group across two or three within a few minutes of each other rather than hunting for one that fits everyone. Tell each innkeeper it is one party. They will usually help coordinate.
Can we do it outdoors?
Yes, and many families want to. Bring more layers than you think you need, pick a spot with parking close by so that older relatives can get there, and have an indoor fallback for wind.
